Three years into the Online CALFE (Children & Authors' Literary Fanfare & Events) marked a significant achievement in the founder's desire to see culturally diverse books in the hands of children, not just within school or library settings, but as joint family experiences.
When Sade decided to flow with the idea of creating a forum for authors of African and Caribbean heritage in 2021, it was mainly due to the imposed lockdown and the need to help herself and other authors sail through isolation. Not being able to visit schools, libraries and festivals, she had experienced a good number of event cancellations and was aware of her frustrations.
Nonetheless, she diverted that energy to setting up interviews with authors across continents, wanting to know how they were fairing in the midst of the pandemic and gain insight into the books they had published or were working on.
The positive response to her clarion's call took her by surprise and within the first few weeks she had interviewed ten authors! True to her nature, she felt the need to share her new found author friendships at a larger scale and there the idea of a literary fanfare was birthed.
On the backbone of The Kiddie-writers' Forum which she set up in November 2018, she launched the very first Children and Authors' Literary Fanfare during 2021 in celebration of Black History Month. She hosted no less than fourteen authors as an online event, attracting over a hundred families across the United Kingdom and beyond.
However, it was only in October 2023 that the magic powers of storytelling under the same roof at the invitation of Marc De'ath Chelmsford City's Cultural Strategy, became a reality!
